Big Heads: What’s the Big Deal?

by Todd Fry on January 10, 2013

Have you seen the Big Heads at ball games in the last couple years? We’ve been making a lot of those recently for our local university, North Dakota State University.

At SIGNARAMA Fargo, we have created a lot of Big Head characters, typically for the athletes and other well-known people, like the head coach, mascot, and some university personnel. Our store actually has a contract with North Dakota State to make Big Heads of its players for the cheerleading squad.Big Heads - Todd Fry, SIGNARAMA Fargo

Big Heads are larger-than-life cutouts of the person’s head that can be used by fans to show their support for their team, whether by using a clean Big Head or by using a Big Head of the opposing team that has been doctored to show the holder’s true feelings — busted-out teeth, pirate’s patch, digitally distorted Big Heads, or mustaches.

We make these Big Heads by putting a digital print on Coroplast, a thick, stiff foam board. Next, SIGNARAMA staff members will die cut around the large print very carefully.

These Big Heads are ordered directly from the university through a contract, so copyright is not an issue — this is something you may have to deal with if you get Big Heads for your own favorite team and games. NDSU pre-determines what images they can use in order to be compliant with NCAA standards for these Big Head images.

The cheer team will then pass them around the student section at football games, wave them at free throw shooters at basketball games, and other displays of team spirit — and more than a few distractions — to show their support for the team.

Big Heads Cutout of the state of TexasA typical order from NDSU is 4 – 5 Big Heads per year. Players generally have a shorter shelf life, while fixed figures like coaches and mascots see a longer life with the fans. Some time ago, SIGNARAMA Fargo did a cutout in the shape of Texas when the North Dakota State University was in the NCAA Division I football national championship against Sam Houston University. They pulled the cutout out again when they recently made a run for the national championship this year.

Big Heads have another application too: SIGNARAMA has created life-sized cutouts of regular employees for their businesses. These Big Heads have been used as an event or promotion for their business as well – think about the old-time stand-up cardboard cutouts of glamorous superstars.
