Care for Vehicle Wraps

by Susan Bogen on June 12, 2012

While vehicle wraps make great mobile marketing materials, a lot of people hesitate in getting them, because they worry the wrap will not maintain its integrity over the years.

Not to worry. With proper care and maintenance, a vehicle wrap can last as long as five years, and some people have gotten theirs to last even longer. At SIGNARAMA, it’s our hope that every vehicle wrap that leaves our shop last five years or longer. In order to make our vehicle wraps last a long, long time, we want to provide some helpful tips on extending the life of each wrap.

Once the vehicle wrap has been completed, it is important not to wash that vehicle in a commercial car wash too soon after the process has been completed. The vehicle wrap needs to set for about a week or so before washing it. After that first week is up, you can wash and scrub your wrapped vehicle just like any other car.

However, if the vehicle has already been abused (say, as a construction vehicle), running the wrapped vehicle through a commercial carwash may speed up the normal wear and tear — small dings and nicks will become large dings and nicks. Instead, wash these trucks and cars by hand, taking special care around the dinged-up areas. We see heavy wear and tear on vehicle wraps that have been used in construction work. Scratches, scrapes, and so forth from the different construction equipment are all common problems that these wraps face, but by taking extra care, you can still help them live a long life.

Even the colors can hold up over time. While storing your vehicle in a garage or in the shade can help keep the wrap alive, it is no longer an issue. Our vehicle wraps have built-in UV protection, and fading from the sun is not a problem. It used to be that red would fade first, but we are really finding this is no longer a problem. Technology is always changing and constantly improving; so are we. The materials are now holding up beautifully.

If you take care of your vehicle’s wrap, you may see your wrap outlast your actual vehicle. We are finding that people are coming in to have new vehicles wrapped for their companies because the cars started wearing out before the wraps themselves did. So when you get a new company car, you know it’s time for a new vehicle wrap.

Exotic Vehicle Wraps January 21, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Great article about how to care for your vehicle wrap. Many consumers often get worried about how long the wrap will last, or how to go about maintaining the wrap only to find it’s a small percentage of the effort that goes into maintaining paint. Great points, well written.
