John Swanson got into the Signarama business like many of our franchisees: he attended a franchise show because he was looking to get into a franchise business of some sort. A franchise show is an excellent way for an entrepreneur to explore all his or her options and see what’s out there.
That’s how John became the owner of the sole Signarama store in Springfield, Missouri in 1996. He already had an idea of the business opportunities he wanted to check out before he attended the show, and Signarama was third on his list.
John said once he started talking with the people in the booth, he became more and more impressed with their level of professionalism and the whole organization in general. He felt drawn into the business without feeling any type of pressure.
John said he felt comfortable with the management, and he liked the existing business model put in place by Signarama corporate. “I liked that they did not take shortcuts to compromise the quality of their service,” John told us.
Previously, John had been in the art materials and repro-graphics (blueprints) business. He had worked previously with architects selling the necessary equipment, along with the blueprints. He was also a sign purchaser, and had difficulties finding sign companies that could print for him in a timely manner, which made his interaction with Signarama even more important and top-of-mind.
John says the enthusiasm of the staff at Signarama Springfield, no matter what project or scope, is what has made them successful throughout the years. They even started seeing big successes at the very beginning. John and his wife received the Rookie of the Year award during the first year, and she worked with him for the first few years, managing the production part of the business. The store has been awarded a number of other awards, including Team Player of the Year (twice), the Million Dollar Club, and the Hall of Fame Club.
