Signarama Carmel in central Indiana has a new owner: Jay Patel recently purchased the existing franchise from previous owner, Joel Hall, who has built a strong business, been a community mainstay, and served as a mentor to new franchisees.
Jay’s background is in mechanical engineering, but he has always enjoyed owning his own business. From dry cleaners to a medical transportation company, he’s owned a wide variety of businesses. About a year and a half ago, he sold his medical transport company and began looking for a new endeavor. He found the Signarama store in Carmel, spoke with Joel many times, and liked that he wouldn’t need to start the business from scratch.
Jay says that at first, he was hesitant about getting into a franchise business, as he had never owned one. He was unsure about having to follow the rules and regulations that come with owning a franchise. However, after talking with Joel, Jay said he felt more at ease about moving forward with the purchase of the Signarama store.
So, on March 24, 2014, Jay took over the ownership of Signarama Carmel. He spent about a week shadowing the employees of the store to learn the inner workings. After that, he went to Franchisee training School to prepare himself for ownership. Our Franchisee School is a two week class aimed at teaching new owners how to run, manage, promote, and operate their store. Jay said that he’s been use to shooting from the hip with his other businesses, but there are standards and guidelines that must be followed. Ultimately, they help ensure that all Signarama stores provide the same high quality service and products to their customer, so people know they can get the same level of work at any store anywhere in the world.
Jay says he also likes the fact that the store is in close proximity to his home. One of his goals was to have a business that wasn’t too far away. With his last business, he drove 45 minutes to his job, and now it’s been reduced to 10, which saves him nearly six hours of driving per week.
