In the last few years, Signarama Orlando has been able to work on some interesting projects for our clients. We recently finished our first full vehicle wrap, which is a pretty large project for the Signarama staff. It was a large white van, almost the size of a box truck, for a company called Wireless Technology. We’ wrapped it with black vinyl wrap, to help with some coloring issues, covering about 300 square feet.
Signarama Orlando and Wireless Technology have worked together over the years (they’re our neighbors), but this is the first project we’ve done for them on this scale. The van has been wrapped in a high-end 3M 1080 series black vinyl, and we’re laminating the different graphic elements and letters like cut vinyl. In a sense it’s like doing two vehicle wraps.
We decided this was the better approach, because although we could print the black background out on the digital printer, we knew we could have coloring issues with each different panel, especially when printing 200 – 300 square feet of vinyl. When it comes to printing, there are actually two possible combinations of black — the kind printed with all black ink, and the kind that’s printed with every color of ink. But either way, there are potential consistency problems we wanted to avoid.
With the 3M vinyl, we knew the color would be consistent. Plus, the 1080 series is much easier to work with than your typical vehicle wrap vinyl. It came to the Signarama Orlando office pre-laminated, cut, and ready to apply.
Black vinyl also has the benefit of being less likely to fade in the long run, which is especially important here in sunny Florida. We also needed to make sure the images stood out against the black background. All in all, we made the right choice, and the van looks excellent, even if we do say so ourselves.
