Signarama Troy/Madison Heights’ Biggest Project to Date

by Bob Chapa on September 25, 2012

The biggest project we have ever worked on at SIGNARAMA Troy/Madison Heights was a very large outdoor electrical wall sign. It had to be seen from several different highways on a Detroit-area building, so it was positioned 7 stories high.Sign for 1-800-LAW-FIRM

And it’s big, about the size of a small apartment.

What We Built

We were asked by 1-800-LAW-FIRM to construct a very large outdoor electrical wall sign that had nothing but the company name on it. 1-800-LAW-FIRM specializes in creating a directory for attorneys nationwide, and this sign was part of their move into the Detroit area.

We crafted the sign, which was a mixture of channel letters, and a box design. Channel letters are very large individual letters that are lighted and placed on the outside of a building, like one of the big box stores. Basically, each channel letter is an individual sign!

The letters themselves are 8 feet tall, bigger than any of the workers constructing the project. They filled the entire back portion of our warehouse. The completed sign was so large that it had to be hauled to the site in two separate pieces on two separate trailers.

How We Installed It

Overall, the sign is 8 feet tall x 120 feet long — 960 square feet. It had to be hoisted with two cranes to attach it to the building. Because we were attaching the sign to the building, we had several meetings with the architect of the building to come up with the color, shape, fasteners, etc. We even had our own engineers come up with an engineering plan.

And of course, this is not something you can afford to have any errors on, especially typos! We proofed every single change, including all the changes by the architect or engineers.

The installation took approximately three days, and it involved trucking the two pieces of the sign to the site, assembling it on site, and numerous inspections by local building inspectors. Two cranes were required to lift the sign up to the top level of the building, 70 feet in the air, where we attached it to the building, for everyone to be able to see from several different Detroit highways.

Architecturally, it’s a huge part of the building renovation. 1-800-LAW-FIRM had invested a lot of money into their building and wanted to showcase their company in the biggest way possible. The sign can be seen day or night.

SIGNARAMA Troy/Madison Heights installing 1-800-LAW-FIRM signWe were contacted to build this sign, because the building was located right next to the freeway and they were looking for major visibility from all of the different freeway intersections. That meant it had to be big, it had to be bright, and it had to be done right.

Of all the sign companies they contacted, SIGNARAMA Troy/Madison Heights was the only one eager to help them. We got back to them immediately and they visited our facility. Coincidentally, at the time they were visiting our shop, we were building several outdoor electrical signs, which were being done on a smaller scale, but with a similar concept. They were able to see firsthand what we could do; it was very good timing!

For SIGNARAMA, this was a really large job, and we hope we can work on more signs of this type, and even this size. It’s been a great example of what SIGNARAMA can do, and helped us flex a lot of sign making muscles we don’t always get to use.
